Each organisation below is located on six independent measurements rather than a single left-to-right line: who owns productive assets, how social life should be ordered, how power is organised, at what level decisions are taken, who counts as a member, and by what means change is pursued.

What United States argues about

Contested, live, or settled

The settled axis is usually more revealing than the contested one, and it is the one foreign coverage never reports — because a question nobody argues about generates no copy. A market where ownership is settled and membership is contested carries entirely different risks from one where the reverse is true, and both look identical in a headline.

What the shape implies

Offered as an input to a judgement rather than as one. A coordinate describes a stated position and a governing record; it does not forecast, and competence and circumstance are not on any axis.

• Ownership is contested. A change of government can move tax, ownership and the terms on which private capital operates. Exposure here is direct.
• The organisation of power is contested. The rules themselves are in play, which makes contract enforcement, regulatory predictability and the durability of any concession the live question rather than policy content.
• Membership or social order is contested. Expect volatility in workforce, licensing and public-facing exposure rather than in fiscal terms. Reputational risk here is higher than balance-sheet risk.
• The level of decision is contested. Which authority you deal with may change without any policy changing. Regulatory relationships built at one level may not transfer.

The widest recorded disagreement here is on scale of decision, spanning 20 points. The narrowest is on method and tempo, at 15. Where a country's politics is narrow on an axis, that question is settled and is not what its elections are about — which is usually invisible from outside, because foreign coverage reports the loud axis rather than the contested one.
