Is the Republican Party fascist? The claim, measured
“The Republican Party is fascist.”
Measured against US Republican Party and Italian Fascism
Distance is measured across six independent axes, each running from −10 to +10, out of a maximum separation of 49.0. How the scoring works →
Strongest case for the claim
Expert surveys record substantial movement toward illiberalism since 2000 with no corresponding movement on economics. V-Party's illiberalism measures place it closer to governing parties in hybrid regimes than to European centre-right parties. Contesting an election result and treating opponents as illegitimate are two of the four Linz criteria.
Strongest case against
Fascism is corporatist, anti-market and built on a mass paramilitary party that abolishes elections outright. The Republican Party runs primaries, loses elections and concedes them at state level, pursues tax reduction and deregulation, and has no militia wing of consequence. Its state organisations certified results against pressure in 2020.
What the coordinates show. The institutional party and the movement inside it are coded as separate entries, because they diverge. The party scores +03 on authority; the movement scores +06 and is flagged contested with the lowest confidence rating in the dataset. Distance to Italian Fascism is 13.5 for the party. The honest finding is that one axis has moved and five have not.
The six measurements
| Axis | GOP | PNF | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| EC · Economic organisation | +06 | +01 | 5 |
| CU · Social and cultural order | +06 | +08 | 2 |
| AU · Organisation of power | +03 | +09 | 6 |
| SC · Scale of decision | 00 | +09 | 9 |
| ID · Rule of membership | +04 | +07 | 3 |
| CH · Method and tempo | −03 | +07 | 10 |
Both cases are stated because the atlas does not settle arguments by assertion. Where the underlying dispute is conceptual rather than factual, that is said plainly rather than resolved.
