How change comes
Method and tempo — one point apart, and one of them killed the other.
Reform, rupture and restoration
The last axis measures the means and tempo of change an organisation endorses — from change only through existing institutions to the destruction of those institutions by force.
Two things about the negative pole are worth noting. It contains both the Fabian and the Burkean, who agree about method and disagree about everything else — which demonstrates on its own that this axis is independent of content. And it does not mean satisfaction with the status quo: a movement can want enormous change and insist it come lawfully, which describes most successful reform movements in history.

One point apart, and one of them killed the other
At the Second Congress of the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party in 1903, the party split over the definition of membership in the party statute.

Both Marxist, both seeking common ownership, both internationalist, both secular and modernising. What separated them was whether transformation required a disciplined vanguard seizing power at the earliest opportunity, or a mass party building support through existing institutions.
The faction that won imprisoned, exiled and eventually killed the faction that lost. Julius Martov died in exile in Berlin in 1923; most Mensheviks who remained were dead within fifteen years.
A one-dimensional model places these two groups at the same point, because on the axis it measures they are at the same point. It has no way to record the difference that determined which of them survived.
Movements cross this axis
Organisations move here more decisively than anywhere else, and the crossings are among the most consequential events in modern political history. Sinn Féin and the broader republican movement across the 1990s. The African National Congress in 1990. Several European communist parties through the 1970s.
Three features recur:
- It is usually the largest single move an organisation makes, and it is usually not accompanied by comparable movement on the content axes.
- It produces splits, with a fragment retaining the original position — which is why a movement and its splinters diverge sharply at these moments.
- A snapshot misrepresents it badly. An organisation coded before its transition and cited afterwards produces a characterisation that is not merely out of date but reversed on the axis that matters most for how it should be treated.
Find a crossing
Pick a movement that abandoned armed struggle for electoral politics, or the reverse. Write down its position on the other five axes before and after.
If the content axes barely moved while method moved a long way, you have found the pattern. Then ask the question that matters practically: how long did commentary keep describing it by its pre-crossing position? That lag is where most out-of-date characterisations live.
