Contested, live, or settled
The settled axis is usually more revealing than the contested one, and it is the one foreign coverage never reports — because a question nobody argues about generates no copy. A market where ownership is settled and membership is contested carries entirely different risks from one where the reverse is true, and both look identical in a headline.

What the shape implies
Offered as an input to a judgement rather than as one. A coordinate describes a stated position and a governing record; it does not forecast, and competence and circumstance are not on any axis.
- Ownership is settled. A change of government is unlikely to alter your tax or ownership position materially. That is the single most useful thing to know before a board discussion, and it is almost never in the coverage.

Where a country's politics is narrow on an axis, that question is settled and is not what its elections are about — which is usually invisible from outside, because foreign coverage reports the loud axis rather than the contested one.
