Strongest case for the claim
It abolished feudal privilege, hereditary titles and the confessional state, declared universal rights, enfranchised men without property, abolished slavery in the colonies in 1794, and gave the political vocabulary its terms for radical change.
Strongest case against
The seating plan that produced the words left and right described a chamber that contained both. The Girondins were liberal constitutionalists who opposed price controls during famine and were guillotined by the Jacobins for it. The Terror suspended the constitution the revolution had just ratified.
What the coordinates show. The Jacobins and the Girondins are 12.6 apart, on the same side of the same revolution, fourteen points apart on method and twelve on authority. The word left was coined to describe a room in which this argument was happening. Applying it to the whole event flattens the distinction it was invented to make.
