Is the mainstream centre-left communist? The claim, measured
“The mainstream centre-left is communist.”
Measured against US Democratic Party and Bolsheviks
Distance is measured across six independent axes, each running from −10 to +10, out of a maximum separation of 49.0. How the scoring works →
Strongest case for the claim
Both traditions favour redistribution, public provision of health care and regulation of private enterprise, and both have historically used the language of collective action against concentrated wealth. Programmes such as single-payer health insurance would place a very large sector under public control.
Strongest case against
Communism is defined by abolishing private ownership of the means of production and, in every historical instance, by a single party holding a monopoly of legal political activity. No mainstream centre-left party proposes either. The gap opens widest on exactly the two axes that define the difference: ten points on organisation of power and sixteen on method.
What the coordinates show. The measured distance is 20.0. That is a genuinely uncomfortable result, because the distance between the two US parties is 19.3 — almost the same figure. But the composition is entirely different. The two US parties diverge on culture and membership by eleven points each and on method by three. The Democratic Party and the Bolsheviks diverge on organisation of power by ten and on method by sixteen. Same magnitude, different content. The claim names a specific institutional arrangement — a single legal party plus the abolition of private ownership — and neither component is present in the programme being described. What the numbers do show is that American party polarisation on cultural questions is now extreme by any comparative standard, which is a real finding and a different one.
Axis by axis
A single distance figure is a headline. Which axes carry the gap is the story, and it is usually what the claim is really about.
| Axis | US Democratic Party | RSDLP(b) | Gap | Reading | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| EC · Economic organisation | −03 | −09 | 6 | Differs | Real difference, but not the dividing line. |
| CU · Social and cultural order | −05 | −05 | 0 | Agrees | Effectively the same position. Not what an argument between them is about. |
| AU · Organisation of power | −02 | +08 | 10 | Diverges | Carries the disagreement. Any claim that these two are alike has to explain this. |
| SC · Scale of decision | +04 | +07 | 3 | Agrees | Effectively the same position. Not what an argument between them is about. |
| ID · Rule of membership | −06 | −07 | 1 | Agrees | Effectively the same position. Not what an argument between them is about. |
| CH · Method and tempo | −06 | +10 | 16 | Diverges | Carries the disagreement. Any claim that these two are alike has to explain this. |
The evidence, so you need not take our word for it
Every score above carries a rationale and at least one artefact a third party can check. These are the cells that matter most to this claim.

What this does not settle
Where the disagreement is about which features define a word, no coordinate system resolves it. Two people with these figures in front of them can disagree indefinitely and both be reasoning correctly. What the measurement does is narrow the argument to what the word should mean, which is smaller than settling it and more than nothing.
This page states both cases because the atlas is not in the business of settling arguments by assertion. Where the underlying dispute is conceptual rather than factual, that is said plainly rather than resolved.
