Strongest case for the claim
It has governed in formal alliance with the South African Communist Party since before 1994, several of its senior figures have been SACP members, and the 1955 Freedom Charter demanded that the mines, banks and monopoly industry be transferred to the people as a whole.
Strongest case against
In office it adopted the GEAR macroeconomic programme in 1996, has run inflation targeting through an independent reserve bank since 2000, has privatised rather than nationalised, and lost its majority in 2024 and entered coalition without incident. Not one bank or mine has been nationalised in thirty years.
What the coordinates show. The ANC scores −04 on economics — to the right of Die Linke, the Kerala communists and the Economic Freedom Fighters, and close to European social democracy. Its trajectory records the move: −07 in 1955, −02 in 1996, −04 today. The alliance is real and the programme it produced in government is not the one the question assumes.
