Strongest case for the claim

Three state branches have been classified as confirmed right-wing extremist by domestic intelligence and the national party was reclassified in 2025. A 2023 meeting on deportation plans including naturalised citizens triggered the largest counter-demonstrations in decades. Senior figures have used phrasing drawn from the Nazi period and been convicted for it.

Strongest case against

It contests every election, holds seats in every state parliament and the Bundestag, has never been banned, and has no paramilitary wing. Its founding issue was the euro. Its economic programme is market-liberal, where the NSDAP's was directed war economy. It seeks votes, not the abolition of voting.

What the coordinates show. The AfD and National Socialism are 12.7 apart, converging on culture and membership and diverging on authority, method and scale. The entry carries a contested flag and medium confidence because its regional wings differ sharply and its classification is the subject of active legal dispute in Germany. That dispute is not resolvable by any coordinate system.

Both cases are stated because the atlas does not settle arguments by assertion. Where the underlying dispute is conceptual rather than factual, that is said plainly rather than resolved.
