Strongest case for the claim

The two organisations were openly linked for decades under the Armalite and ballot box strategy. Several of its current senior figures were members of the armed organisation. Decommissioning was slow and contested and the army council's continued existence was disputed for years afterwards.

Strongest case against

The ceasefire has held since 1994, decommissioning was completed under independent verification in 2005, and the party has held ministerial office in a power-sharing executive for most of the last two decades. It now holds the office of First Minister in Northern Ireland and is the largest opposition party in the Republic.

What the coordinates show. The atlas codes Sinn Féin's trajectory across four anchors: +08 on method in 1981, +02 in 1998, −02 in 2010 and −03 today. Eleven points. The FARC, EH Bildu and Nepal's Maoists show the same movement. Whether a completed transition should still be read through its origin is a judgement about people, and the atlas measures organisations.

Both cases are stated because the atlas does not settle arguments by assertion. Where the underlying dispute is conceptual rather than factual, that is said plainly rather than resolved.
