Distance is measured across six independent axes, each running from −10 to +10, out of a maximum separation of 49.0. How the scoring works →

Strongest case for the claim

Perón nationalised railways, utilities and the central bank, delivered the largest wage increases in Argentine history and built a state-linked union federation. He also sheltered war criminals, censored the press, packed the courts and modelled parts of his corporatist doctrine on Italian practice he admired as a military attaché.

Strongest case against

Both descriptions are accurate, which is the finding. The same banner has since produced Menemism, which privatised oil, telecoms, rail and pensions at +08 on economics, and Kirchnerism, which renationalised several of them at −06. Those two are fourteen points apart on economics and are the same movement.

What the coordinates show. Peronism is not mislabelled; it is unlabellable on one axis. Its stable coordinates are on authority and method, not economics — which is what it means to call something a movement rather than a programme. Load Menemism against Kirchnerism in the comparison above and the point is unmistakable. Any spectrum that forces it to a single point is producing a number with no information in it.

Axis by axis

A single distance figure is a headline. Which axes carry the gap is the story, and it is usually what the claim is really about.

The evidence, so you need not take our word for it

Every score above carries a rationale and at least one artefact a third party can check. These are the cells that matter most to this claim.

Peronist neoliberalism · EC +08

Same party banner, opposite economic coordinate. This entry exists to make that legible.

  • Documented act or statuteYPF, Aerolíneas Argentinas, telecoms, rail and pensions were privatised between 1990 and 1994.
  • Documented act or statuteThe 1991 Convertibility Law pegged the peso to the dollar by statute.

Kirchnerism · EC −06

Coded −6: renationalisation, price controls and export taxes.

  • Documented act or statuteYPF was renationalised in 2012 and private pension funds taken into the state system in 2008.

What this does not settle

Where the disagreement is about which features define a word, no coordinate system resolves it. Two people with these figures in front of them can disagree indefinitely and both be reasoning correctly. What the measurement does is narrow the argument to what the word should mean, which is smaller than settling it and more than nothing.

This page states both cases because the atlas is not in the business of settling arguments by assertion. Where the underlying dispute is conceptual rather than factual, that is said plainly rather than resolved.
