Strongest case for the claim
Over four thousand judges and prosecutors were dismissed after 2016, state-appointed trustees replaced elected mayors across the south-east, the country has jailed more journalists than almost any other, and the constitution was rewritten by referendum to concentrate power in the presidency.
Strongest case against
Elections are genuinely competitive and have been lost: the governing party lost Istanbul and Ankara in 2019 and again in 2024, and conceded. Opposition parties campaign, hold major cities and receive tens of millions of votes. Turnout is among the highest in the world.
What the coordinates show. The AKP scores +08 on authority, two points below the ceiling occupied by Putinism at +10. Distance between them is 8.0. That two-point gap is the difference between a system where the incumbent can lose a major city and one where opposition candidates are imprisoned or dead. Continuous axes exist so that difference is expressible.
